As the crow flies, it is a shade under ten thousand miles from the town of Malvern in England to the city of Cairns in Australia. The time difference is ten hours (in the UK winter) and thoughts of those left behind in “Blighty” will fill your mind at some point, every single day.

But there is a job to be done in that great Southern land; a seven year mission to complete. Going back to England is not an option; this is your new home.

Nevertheless, the sad goodbyes at the departure gate at London Heathrow after each journey home become harder to endure and no matter how steely your resolve may be, the emotional pull of home, Ten Thousand Miles away, always remains in your heart.

The street lights on the port side
